June 21, 2004, Chris Moyers, East Cape Smoke House, Los Barriles, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Charters, 268; Blue Marlin, 4; Striped Marlin, 162; Dorado, 327; Yellowfin Tuna, 763; Wahoo, 1. Water Temperature, 77-83. Air Temperature, HIGH 99, LOW 70. Seas Fri-Mon: calm all day.

East Cape fishing for Striped Marlin is real nice right now amigos. The all-important fish-per numbers indicate a catch rate of about 35% among all reporting East Cape anglers. That's impressive! Anglers are reporting success to the north off Punta Pescadero (20-40 miles), off Destiladeras, as well as straight off Los Barriles (30-35 miles). As mentioned, a Few Blues were also landed. East Cape anglers reported those catches straight off Los Barriles (35-38 miles), as well as to the north off Isla Cerralvo. Caballito, baliju, and various lures did the trick for billfish.

East Cape fishing for dorado is picking up nicely from what was already some nice, consistent action. According to the all important fish-per numbers, the catch rate among anglers was about 42%. That is real NICE! That's up from 18% last week so that tells you there is definitely an invasion of sorts going on down here on the East Cape. Anglers reported success mostly to the north off Punta Pescadero in the vicinity of the shark buoys. More action occurred to the south off Punta Colorada (2-10 miles). Caballito, baliju, and sardines did fine.

As you can see by the numbers and the photos, the East Cape Yellowfin bite is what we call "happening". There are some real nice fish being landed amigos! The overall catch rate is about 98%. Anglers reported some fun straight off Los Barriles (30-35 miles), to the north off Punta Pescadero (25-40 miles), as well as to the south between Buena Vista (30-40 miles), and La Ribera (23-27 and 35-38 miles). Sardines, caballito, cedar plugs and lures did the trick so far this week.

Rounding out the report was 1 Wahoo landed off Los Barriles (25 miles) on a pink and green lure.
