MARLIN TO 600 POUNDS ATTACK TEASERS
DURING SALTWATER FLY FISHING AT CABO

Sept. 11, 2005, Boots Fawcett, Cabo San Lucas fly fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Oh my! What a way to start 22 days of Cabo San Lucas fishing for big marlin with a fly rod.

The fishing was magnificent out of the Hotel Solmar at Cabo San Lucas. Everybody is getting into the blue and black marlin and there are some quality fish in the mix.

Cabo San Lucas fishing water and conditions are close to perfection, 82 to 84 degree water temperatures and beautiful deep and rich blue water colors that say "welcome to billfish country."

More importantly, there is stability and with stability there should be no change in the fishing.

My first teaser was a daisy chain of 5 medium rubber squid and Black Bart's Lunch. On the second wave I ran a large and totally destroyed Seven Strand plug in pink. And finally, on the third wave, I placed a purple plug which runs straight and true and whose skirt has been replaced numerous times. The plugs were of course without hooks.

Our fishing course was the Inner Gorda Bank to Destiladeras and San Luis Bank, back to the Outer Gorda Bank and finally back to Cabo San Lucas on the 1300 mark to Santa Maria Canyon and the 1150 bank. All of our action was in the morning.

At 8:30 a.m., a 600 pound black marlin came completely out of water twice on the purple lure, charged the Pink Seven Strand and ended up on Black Bart's Lunch and went down.

At 9:35 a.m., a 350 pound blue marlin followed the purple plug to midpoint and went down.

At 10:25 a.m., a 200 pound blue marlin followed the purple plug to midpoint and went down, and finally, at 11:00 a.m. a Pacific Sailfish was lured into the transom on the purple plug and twice attacked my 14 inch Blue Master Marlin fly.

In truth it was too much fly for this diminutive bird of the sea. Alas, there was no hook up. But with fishing like this, who cares?
