CABO SAN LUCAS SPORTFISHING BOATS RUNNING LONG TO LOS FRAILES

May 28, 2004, by Larry Edwards, Cortez Yacht Charters, Cabo San Lucas fishing, Baja California Sur, Mexico:

Billfish action has picked up considerably, but the run to get there is about 28 miles. According to Roberto Marquez, the current Cabo San Lucas hot spot for the billfish is at Destiladeras, near Las Frailes, where the water temps range from 73-76 degrees.

The "Fish Cabo", reporting for 6 Cabo San Lucas fishing days, reflected 14 striped marlin released and 1 dorado, (the Bob Masterson Group landed & released 6 stripers & captured the 1 dorado for their 3 fishing days aboard the "Fish Cabo").

The "Juanita VIII", reporting for 5 Cabo San Lucas fishing days, released 7 stripers and captured 1 mako shark, (the Glen Osmond party released 3 stripers and captured the mako shark during their first 2 fishing days aboard the "Juanita VIII").

The GAVIOTA FLEET, averaged about 1 billfish per boat day fished, with Gaviota VII being the fleet's highliner, with 7 stripers released for 5 fishing days. Overall Cabo San Lucas fishing counts reflected 26 stripers, (24 released) 4 dorado and 17 yellowfin tuna.

Cabo San Lucas Climate: Warm & sunny weather, temps range from 70 at night to high 90's day time.

Cabo San Lucas Sea Conditions: Fairly calm conditions persist on the Sea of Cortez side, where all the boats are currently fishing. Temps are wide ranging, starting at 59-60 at Cabo, rising to 72 at the Gordo and moving up to 73-76 at Destiladeras and above.

Best Cabo San Lucas Fishing Area: The boats making the run above the Gordo Banks and just below Las Frailes, have been mostly successful with the billfish action, often with scores of 2 or more.

Best Lure/Bait: Most of the fish are sleepers or feeders and live bait has been best, albeit, the bait has been very small & difficult to work with.

Cabo San Lucas Live Bait Supply: No lack of bait, just small caballitos.
