BAJA FISHING TRIP RUN DOWN
MEX 1 TO BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES

June 11, 2005, Christopher Bruno, Bahia de Los Angeles, Baja trip report, Mexico:

The Catavina Pemex station was closed. The Baja road from Mex 1 to Bahia de Los Angeles is great, not a single pothole the entire stretch.

The Bahia de Los Angeles Pemex station has diesel and Magna Sin.

Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay) was blowing a good 25 knots every afternoon late in the week and some days it started out that way. The wind shifts 180 degrees between Punta Gringa and Camp Gecko, so tin boats need to be cautious.

Camp Gecko had plenty of room for walk-ins this week. The fishing was all at Isla Smith, about 10 miles from the camp. I beat the rest of the islands for nothing and then found the fleet at Isla Smith. The yellowtails were boiling early and during good current movement and could be had throwing iron or trolling. Most of mine came trolling a mackerel Rapala Magnum, and a deeper diving Storm version of the same, at about 4.5 m.p.h.

The yellowtail all ran a bit over 24 inches and 7 or 8 pounds on my scale. The same fish were apparently 15 pounds on my neighbor´s scale. Go figure.
