FIRST FLY-IN TRIP TO CAMPO LAS ANIMAS LODGE SOUTH
OF BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES BY BAJA AIR VENTURES

March 14, 2005, Tim Farwell, Bahia de los Animas, Baja California, Mexico fly-in trip:

I just returned from my first of many trips to the new Campo las Animas lodge of Baja Air Ventures located at Bahia de las Animas. I'm the new pilot, eco and fishing guide. The new camp is up and running and we have done our third week of guests. The new camp is one bay to the south from the old camp called La Unica. Accommodations are Mongolian style yurts.

One day of morning fishing during the new moon produced unlimited bass, Scorpionfish, and "Ling's." We also were getting Squid while trying for Cabrilla at deeper depths. The water temperature was a freezing 58 degrees but the mornings were calm and the afternoons were warm. The ocean was blown out by 2 p.m. however.

Dee Minery caught her long sought after Lingcod. She had spent countless days in Oregon fishing for Ling and here she finally caught it! Mark Dietrich caught a Giant Squid on 25 pound line with a fish trap. He said it put on a great fight!

Also in the near area were unlimited Finback whales feeding. These whales are very approachable and were a sight to see. On the last day two Orcas were also seen in the bay of Las Animas near the old fish camp as shown in The Baja Catch.

A landing strip is planned, at Campo las Animas. We fly into Bahia de los Angeles (L.A. Bay) and panga to the camp. The campo is the next bay south from the old camp, La Unica. Charts call it Alacron.

The trips vary in length. Some are part Gray Whale watching in Guerrero Negro with 3 nights in Campo las Animas. Others are a full 6 days in Campo las Animas. The trips fly out of Brown Field in single engine aircraft. There are three pangas with 115 hp motors.
