FISHING TRIP WITH CAPT. PEPE AT BAHIA DE LOS ANGELES

June 25, 2004, Mark Baker, Bahia de los Angeles fishing trip, Baja California, Mexico:

On friday june 11 me, mark baker from hemet and my brother bob baker from carlsbad and my girlfriend nicole venegas from anza california all headed down to bahia to fish for yellowtail.

We picked my brother up in carlsbad and stopped in at pacific coast bait and tackle for a few last items we would need. we then headed for Bahia. when we arrived in bahia we went to casa diaz and saw the host,"chubasco". he set us up with a room right there in the front on the beach for 28 dollars a night. casa diaz also has a satellite phone now to call ahead of time for reservations. the # is 011-52-200-124-9112.

after we got settled in the room we went and talked to sammy of sammy diaz sportfishing to get a panga with our one and only guide, pepe. we love capt. pepe. he’s a very good guide, really knows the water there at bahia.

the panga was 140 dollars a day. we fished the next morning at about 5:30 am. we first went out about 100 yards from the beach and caught bait with our lucky joe rigs. bait was plentiful, we made bait within 15 min.

we then headed for isla smith to fish for yellowtail. we didnt find any fish there so we then headed for the back side of isla ventana, where we found a lot of boiling fish. we all casted irons on them first, green and yellow, blue and chrome, and green blue and chrome mackeral pattern. we caught several yellows there.

then as it went flat we headed over to the backside of isla horse head and we found more boils of fish. we casted irons on them and we yo-yoed irons on the bottom for more yellowtail. after a while we switched to live bait and got them on the fly line and also dropper loop on the bottom.

all in all we all three got our limits that day and the follwing days we fished. lots of yellows there right now. the fish weighed anywhere from 10 to 20 pounds.

out of all the days we fished we only got three squid in the mix. that was a good thing. we dont really like catching squid.

also when the bite for the yellows would die down we fished bottom for good counts of cabrilla and bass. excellant fishing trip. cant wait to go back.

i also want to note that, on our last day fishing on the 14th of june, as we were headed back in to the beach we hit an extremely large boil of yellowtail on the front side of isla horsehead and got yellows out of it. and then as we were packing up to head out of town the following day, we saw a bunch of diving birds hitting boils 1\2 mile off the beach in front of casa diaz.

the road condition going to bahia was in very good shape except for one stretch of road on the road going from the jct. to the town of bahia itself. about 15 miles outside of bahia de los angeles they are doing major road const. and all the pavement is ripped out for about a 5 mile stretch with tractors doing some grading to the dirt but still passable with no problems.

rumors in town is that they are putting in new pavement all the way into the town. so i’m sure that’s what they were working on. i believe in the very near future they will have all new pavement from where they left off last time about 25 miles down from the jct. all the way to town. the last little stretch of road to town will be new once again. cant wait.
