BIG SCHOOLS OF YELLOWTAIL HALF A MILE FROM SHORE

June 20, 2004, Abraham Vazquez, Camp Gecko, Bahia de los Angeles, Baja California, Mexico:

The fishing now could almost not be better. There are huge schools of yellowtail in the area, most in the 8 to 20-pound range. They are on the surface, boiling all over the place, and all day long.

The strange thing is that for the first time in my 20 years here the yellows are inside the bay like in the old days. All week long, most of the catches have been less than one-half mile from the shore, by the light house, in front of camp, in front of Los Angelitos, and yesterday in front of Daggett’s.

You can imagine how crazy this is. Everybody that has anything that floats, kayaks, small inflatables, etc., is out there catching yellows.

There is lots of bait inside L.A. Bay, and they are in the same areas as the yellows. A few days ago, while making bait, I saw the boils, and took the bait 100 yards and got them.

Most of the yellowtail have been caught on slow-trolled and fly-lined live bait, and also by casting jigs to the boils. Great fishing now

The weather has been great, with not much more than a cooling breeze in the middle of the day, and cool nights. The temperatures in the day have been in the upper-80s, and at night in the mid-60s. Just perfect.
