The MirrOlure Model 111MR -- Beautifully Made To Catch Big Fish
By Gene Kira

I got my first introduction to the effectiveness of very deep, very fast trolling with the MirrOLure 111MR fishing lure years ago at the famous yellowtail bajos north of Isla San Marcos, in Mexico's Sea of Cortez.

After two hours of hard yo-yoing with iron jigs, we knew the yellowtail were suspended about 50 feet deep, and we'd caught two in the 25-pound class, but they were scattered and moving around fast, with no breezers or birds to gun for, and blind trolling was the right thing to do that day.

I tied on the standard deep trolling plug I used in those days, and after another three hours of very slow chugging around, we did manage to catch one more 25 pounder, not a bad day, but nothing to write home about.

Meanwhile, making big circles all around us was another sport boat out of San Lucas Cove. I didn't pay a lot of attention to it, but I did notice that it was trolling at about three times my speed, and I assumed the "dummy" was using surface feathers...for nothing.

Imagine my surprise when we all got back to San Lucas Cove, and this "dummy" unloads eight yellowtail from his boat!

As casually as possible, I glanced at his rods, and on every one of them he had a MirrOlure 111MR tied on, which I had never seen before. Because of the 111MR's tremendous stability and strength, he had been able to troll very deep and very fast, and he caught eight times as many yellowtail as me in about the same amount of time.

Fast forward a couple of years, and I was at the Fred Hall Fishing and Boat Show in Long Beach, California, chatting with Bob Castellon, owner of Sea of Cortez Sportfishing and the San Felipe panga mothership, Celia Angelina. As he had done several times before, Bobby mentioned the MirrOlure 111MRs and urged me to give them a try. It seems Bobby's clients were yanking a "considerable" number of big yellowtail and cabrilla up from down deep by trolling 111MRs with line as heavy as 100-pound test. In fact, the 111MRs were his bread-and-butter lure.

Fast forward a few more years, and I was writing Baja fishing reports for my old website, BajaDestinations.com, and later for Western Outdoor News, receiving reports from hundreds of people per week, and I gradually realized that the "MirrOlure" was becoming one of the most mentioned single lures in Mexico sportfishing waters.

Finally...the light bulb lit up! I started fishing with MirrOlures, and now, that's all I troll with when the fish are big and deep. This lure really works, much, much better than anything I've ever used before. In fact, it's the standard lure for the San Felipe panga motherships that fish the tough yellowtail and cabrilla waters of the Midriff Islands.

In Baja, trolling very deep over rocks and reefs is a super-deadly technique for catching big snappers and groupers into the 20-pound range and beyond. The problem is finding a lure that not only catches fish, but that can stand up to the powerful strikes, the rocks and weeds, and the tremendous tension exterted by the line as a lure is trolled fast and deep. Under really hard-core conditions, most lures will twist and lose their "tune" constantly. You are forced to slow down, go shallow, or stop often to retune the lure. Some so-called "deep diving" lures will get so far out of tune that they refuse to swim straight no matter how much you tweak them, and you are forced to throw them away.

The MirrOlure Model 111MR is a fish-catching performer built like an underwater rhinoceros. You can stomp it, drop it, troll it way deep at rod-bending speeds, rip it through weedy bottoms, and bang it off rocks, and it keeps on swimming laser-straight for you.

From the first day I used it, I was amazed at the effectiveness and ease of use of these lures, on a wide range of fish species, especially in the larger sizes. Yellowtail, snappers, groupers, cabrilla, and even gigantic triggerfish come up from way down deep to inhale these lures. MirrOlures are deadly on yellowtail over deep structure. Under the right conditions, this lure swims so deep, you will occasionally bring up fish that have their air bladders distended!

MirrOlure products are tank tested to make sure they run deep and straight and they are built of top quality materials. The 111MRs have rattles inside, heavy duty hooks and rings--and especially--a heavy, thick plastic diving bill that will break before it loses tune.

This combination of accurate balance and extreme structural integrity allow you to troll the MirrOlure 111MR on 80-pound line at depths and speeds that will literally bend over a heavy tuna stick. In the highest pressure ranges, you cannot hold onto the rod comfortably yourself and must use a rod holder. Yet, the MirrOlure tracks straight and true.

These 111MR floating-divers can achieve depths of 25 feet or more, and they feature a tight wiggling action which can be pulled up to 7 knots. They will achieve the deepest results at 3 to 4 knots with 125 to 150 feet of line out. I know of no finer deep trolling lure for Mexico's sportfishing waters.
